Labor Day
Rest & Work
Balance, Balance, Balance
THE ORIGIN OF WORK
God
God Works in Creation
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.”
Genesis 1:1,31
God Created Us to Work
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
-Genesis 2:15
Q: Are you too tense?
THE ORIGIN OF REST
God
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”
–Genesis 2:2,3
“Remember the Sabbath day [Shabbat – to stop or cease] by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you… son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
Third Commandment
-Exodus 20:8-11
Balance Work & Rest
Some Keys to Successfully Accomplishing “Rest” - Balance Work & Rest
1. Plan for it.
Rest is a “gift” from God that most people don’t utilize.
2. Realize that “Biblical Rest” is not something that we earn.
God says do it every week.
3. Decompress
4. Be Creative
5. Be Realistic
[Golf, Reading certain books, etc.]
6. Remember God’s GRACE
All of us break the 3rd Commandment
Grace = Where God works and you get paid
God wants to work for us.
“For the joy [“You”] set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”
-Hebrews 12:2
