Everything Points to Good Friday

Opening Song: "The Day He Wore My Crown"

Song: "The Wonderful Cross"

Thursday [Passover]

“When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.” … But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.” 22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take it; this is my body.” 23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them… 26 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 30 “Truly I tell you… tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.” 31 But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.

-Mark 14:17-31

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives…he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation…42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him… in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

-Luke 22:39-46

3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees… 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” 5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.I AMhe, Jesus said… 6 When Jesus said,I AMhe, they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.8 Jesus answered, I told you that I AM he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.” 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” 12 … They bound Jesus 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year.”

-John 18:3-13

First Word

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Luke 23:34

“When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the CROSS.”

-Colossians 2:13-15

Song: "Just As I Am"

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”

-Galatians 6:14

(Silent and personal confession)

“Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath...”

-Romans 5:9

Song: "Amazing Grace My Chains Are Gone"

Second Word

“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

-Luke 23:43

“Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.”

-Mark 15:32

“But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Don’t you fear God,’ he said, ‘since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

-Luke 23:40-42

Song: "I Will Rise"

Third Word

“…he said to his mother, ‘Dear woman, here is your son,’ and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ ”

John 19: 26-27

Fourth Word

“My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”

Matthew 27:46

Song: "Above All"

Fifth Word

“I am thirsty.”

John 19:28

Sixth Word

“It is finished.”

John 19:30

“So they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, It is finished.”

-John 19:29,30

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

for thine is the kingdom and the power

and the glory forever and ever.

AMEN!

Seventh Word

“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

-Luke 23:46

“And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

-Matthew 27:50-54

Good Friday

By Mary Schenk

I see him! A crown of thorns pressed on his head.

I see his eyes. He knows what lies ahead.

There's torment, fatigue, and strain.

A look of dread; he does not complain.

He struggles on another step.

His friends all fled, and then they wept.

He's finally there that awful hill.

It's where he'll die; where he'll be killed.

They pound the nails through flesh and blood.

That torturous deed, yet he's alone.

They hung a sign; "A King," it reads.

A cruel message as he bleeds.

I see his mother drawing near.

The hour's now the one she'd feared.

Why can't they see what they have done?

They do not know this is God's Son.

Anguished cries, the darkness pierced.

The trembling earth, it's power fierce.

He's gone. The one who loved you most.

His body is swaying on that post.

Why has such a deed on Calvary,

Impacts us still; yes you and me?

We were those who put him there.

We caused his death, his pain, despair.

Has love like this been shown before?

Compassion comes through bloody gore?

My soul deserves not such a thing.

I caused this death and suffering.

A life so holy he gave for me.

He did it all so I'd be free.

I'll not forget the price he paid.

The day his great plan was displayed!
