Wednesday of Holy Week

“Holy Wednesday”

(AKA “Spy Wednesday”)

 “Behind the Scenes” stuff

The Plot Against Jesus (Matthew 26)

  “When Jesus had finished saying all these things, [About his Second Coming] he said to his disciples, 2 “As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over [By Judas to Jewish Leaders, to Pilate] to be crucified.” 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus SECRETLY and kill him. 5 “But NOT during the festival,” they said, “or there may be a riot among the people.”

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman [Mary] came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.  8 When the disciples [All of them thought this was not right] saw this, they were indignant.

John 12:4-6 says that Judas was the main objector

“But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief;  as keeper of the money bag, [Treasurer] he used to help himself [Steal] to what was put into it.”

-John 12:4-6

(Back to Matthew 26)

 “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.” 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.” 14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot— went to the chief priests 15 and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. [About 4 months wages] 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.”

 -Matthew 26:2-16

“Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 10 So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, 11 for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and believing in him.”

-John 12:9-11

A Couple of Thoughts

 Jesus said;

 “Where your treasure is,

 there will your heart be also”

  -Matthew 6:21

Jesus said;

 “Where your treasure is,

 there will your heart be also”

  -Matthew 6:21

Mary’s treasure placed on the feet of Jesus.

 Judas’ treasure placed in his own hands.

Mary’s heart was for Jesus.

 Judas’ heart was for Himself.

“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’”

- Isaiah 52:7

 No other feet in the entire world were more beautiful to Mary than the feet of Jesus.

How can we be more humble?

 How can we be more devoted to Jesus?

“In your hearts revere [set apart] Christ as Lord.”

 -1 Peter 3:15

Jesus has given his heart to you.

 “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

 -John 15:13

How can we show our devotion to Jesus?
