PRAYER SERIES
Part 4
“‘Our Father in heaven,
HALLOWED be your NAME,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
Hallow = To make something “holy”,
to set it apart, or sanctify it.
“HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME” MEANS
1. His name IS holy because he is holy in himself.
“There is no one HOLY like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.” -1 Samuel 2:2
2. God is holy because he is separated or set-apart from sin.
Remember Jesus on the cross
“And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).” -Mark 15:37
Jesus is asking; why have you Abandoned me? Why have you Separated yourself from me?
The answer is that a Holy God cannot be in the presence of unholiness.
And at that point as Jesus was taking the sin of the world upon himself, he became the most unholy person who has ever lived.
He could not stand in the presence of a holy God, so God, the Father had to turn his back on him.
3. Nothing MAKES God holy.
In fact, anything that is holy, is holy because He makes it so.
“Woe to you, blind guides!... 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that MAKES the gift SACRED?” [Holy]. -Matthew 23:16,18,19
“Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”
-1 Peter 3:18
We are made holy because he willingly become unholy through taking our sins away.
4. We are to KEEP his name holy.
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
-1 Peter 1:15,16
Note that it does not say BECOME holy.
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” -Hebrews 12:14
5. Don’t misuse his name by USING IT FOR WRONG PURPOSES. (Cursing, False swearing like in “I swear to God”, Witchcraft, Curses, etc.)
6. Don’t MISUSE his name by forgetting it.
Jehovah - ________!
[See names at the end of these notes]
7. Call upon his name for all of your provisions in life. (Don’t look to any other sources)
GOD COMMANDS US NOT TO CALL UPON THE WORLD OF THE OCCULT FOR PROVISIONS
(Staying away from the Unholy)
Deuteronomy 18
“When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices [Magick] their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination [Fortune Telling] or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium [Spiritism] or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD… 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God… You must listen to him.”
1. Magick “Sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire… Sorcery…
engages in Witchcraft, or Casts spells.”
Note that I’ve spelled magic by adding a “k” at the end. This is done because those who practice this kind of witchcraft request this spelling so as not to be confused with the kind of magic that magicians perform with slight of hand and illusions.
2. Fortune Telling ……. “Divination, Interprets omens”
3. Spiritism ………….. “Medium or Spiritist or who Consults the dead.”
Notice that Magick, Fortune Telling, and Spiritism all have to do with our gaining some kind of control over our future.
They all look to the spirit world to gain personal blessings.
God says to stay away from these counterfeit sources of comfort confidence, and control.
GOD WANTS OUR FAITH TO BE CHILD-LIKE
This does not mean “childish”.
It means Childlike in so far as we have a whole-hearted, all-in, innocent, unconditional confidence in God for everything.
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children,
you will never enter the
kingdom of heaven.”
-Matthew 18:3
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened,
and I will give you rest.”
–Matthew 11:28
Don’t look for other sources!
THE ORIGIN OF HALLOWEEN
November 1st = “All Saints Day”
That means that the eve of Nov. 1st is Oct 31st
The current name of “Halloween” originates from the day before “All Saint’s Day” which was originally called:
“All Hallow Evening”
later shortened to
“All Hallow’s Even”
or
“All Hallow’s Eve”
later shortened to
“Hallowe’en”
And then finally to,
“Halloween”
HALLOWEEN AND THE REFORMATION
It wasn't just coincidence that Luther chose that particular date to release "The 95 Theses" in Wittenberg, Germany.
He knew that the faithful would be attending November 1st “All Saints Day” worship the very next day.
All Saints' Day, celebrated on Nov. 1, is dedicated to honoring saints that had died.
“Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.”
-Romans 14:8,9
CONCLUSION
As a part of your devotions this next week, you may want to look at the names of God below and ask God to help you to see his holiness, strength, power, and his love for you in a deeper way. His very name and descriptions can bring you comfort and an increased measure of faith, looking to Him and no other false source of help you get through all of the difficulties of life.
Our prayer truly is,
“Our Father, in heaven,
HALLOWED by your name”
In and through my life.
In Jesus' name.
Amen!
