Prayer

Recap

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.”

-Matthew 6

Prayer Recap

Prayer can be defined as, “Communicating/talking with God”.

Categories of Prayer

C.A.T.S. or A.C.T.S.

Confession

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

-1 John 1:8,9

Adoration

“I will extol the Lord at all times;

his praise will always be on my lips.”

-Psalm 34:1

Thanksgiving

“… always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

-Ephesians 5:20

Supplication/Stuff

“You do not have because you do not ask God.”

-James 4:2

A fantastic prayer, is one that asks for “Wisdom”

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

-James 1:5,6

“The Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7 He holds success in store for the upright… he guards … and protects the way of his faithful ones. “Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.”

-Proverbs 2:6-9

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

-1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Two Popular Phrases

“Prayer changes things”

God changes things”

It is faith in God rather than faith in prayer

that makes prayer effective.

“What do you want me to do for you?” ‘Sir, he answered, ‘I want to see again.’ 42 Jesus said to him, ‘Then see!

Your faith has made you well.’”

-Luke 18:41

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:

The old has gone.”

-2 Corinthians 5:17

Reasons People Don’t Pray

1. Prayer hasn’t helped with deep hurts.

2. They are angry at God.

3. Think they haven’t “earned the right”.

4. They don’t know the “right formula”.

5. They think things are pre-determined.

6. Don’t know exactly what to pray for.

We do not know what we ought to pray for, BUT the Spirit himself intercedes for usin accordance with the will of God… in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” -Romans 8:26-28

The Lord’s Prayer

-a model for us.

Matthew 6:6-8

When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father… 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.

8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

LORD’S PRAYER

(Matthew 6:9-13)

Our Father in heaven.

We have a need for other people.

Our shared Father makes us like brothers and sisters to each other.

Thy kingdom come

When Jesus taught us to pray,

“Your kingdom come”

We are praying three things:

1. Let it come to me in a deeper way.

2. Let it come to others who do not yet know him.

3. Let it come on the Second Coming on the last day.

“In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea and saying, ‘Repent, for the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN has come near.’”… “When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee… From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the KINGDOM OF HEAVEN has come near.’”

-Matthew 3:1,2; Matthew 4:12,17

Your will be done

For many people, this is the

first really difficult part of the Lord’s Prayer.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

-Proverbs 3:5,6

God does not want bad things to happen

[Ultimate Will],

but he will permit and control them

[Permissive Will].

Eventually there will be

“…no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

-Revelation 21:4

1. God’s will is that, We want what He wants.

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.

Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

-Matthew 26:39

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.”

-Colossians 3:2,3

2. God’s will is that all are SAVED.

“The Lord… is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but

everyone to come to repentance.”

-2 Peter 3:9

3. God’s will is to love one another.

“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind’… ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

-Matthew 22:37-40

4. It is not God’s will that we become Doormats

“Doormat Disease”

“Disease to Please”

The cure is called, “Boundaries.”

You are valuable.

You are not the Savior of the world, Jesus is.

Give us today our daily Bread.”

Remember the tree skiers?

Don’t stare at what you don’t want to hit.

Our Focus Should be on Spiritual first,

and on Physical second.

“Seek first the kingdom of God…”

- Matthew 6:33

“No one can serve two masters… you will hate the one and love the other… You cannot serve both God and money.”

-Matthew 6:24

“And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

- Matthew 6:12

As we are in the process of forgiving others,

not in the same way as…

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other,

just AS in Christ God forgave you.”

-Ephesians 4:32

NO CONDEMNATION

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed…”.

-John 3:17,18

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

-Romans 8:1,2

Three Steps to Forgiveness

1. Give up your right to hurt them back.

2. Humanize them.

3. Genuinely want good for them in the future.

Jesus ERASES Guilt

Forgive and Forget.

Forgive and File.

Forgive and Properly File.

“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

–Isaiah 43:25

When we realize we are the ones who nailed Jesus to that cross,

we collapse into His arms.

“Lead us not into Temptation”

“Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.”

-Exodus 23:1

What is your "dangling carrot"?

Remember that

TEMPTATION IS “NOT” SIN

It is simply temptation or enticement TO SIN.

We can be tempted in any way about anything at any time.

THREE SOURCES OF TEMPTATION

1. The World

(All around us)

2. The Flesh

(Original Sin)

3. The Devil

(Always tempting us)

Think of the image of the devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other or a mouse trap.

God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

- 1 Corinthians 10:13

Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”

-Hebrews 2:9-18

BUT when we do fall,

God’s grace forgives us.

We are not like

“Humpty Dumpty”

Think of the snarky, smirky, cocky version.

Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life… So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t FALL!

–Luke 21:34; 1 Corinthians 10:12

Sin’s advertised price

is always less than the

actual cost.

I will sing of your love and justice; to you, Lord, I will sing praise. 2 I will be careful to lead a blameless life— when will you come to me? I will conduct the affairs of my house with a blameless heart. 3 I will not look with approval on anything that is vile.”

-Psalm 101:1-3

Always keep in mind that Satan is responsible for evil, not God.

Satan started it.

Satan Instigates Conflict

“WHAT causes FIGHTS and QUARRELS among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire BUT do NOT have, so you kill. You covet BUT you CANNOT get what you want, so you quarrel and fight…”

-James 4

The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.”

-Genesis 3:14

Popular phrase…

“Another one bites the dust.”

We win.

We are fighting FROM victory.

We are not fighting FOR it.

Jesus already won victory on the cross.

“… the one [Jesus] who is in you is greater than

the one [Satan] who is in the world.”

-1 John 4:4

“Submit yourselves, then, to God.

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

-James 4:1-7

Chapter 1

I walk down the street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in.

I am lost ... I am helpless. It isn't my fault.

It takes me forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don't see it.

I fall in again.

I can't believe I am in the same place but,

it isn't my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it is there.

I still fall in ... it's a habit. my eyes are open

I know where I am.

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

Chapter 4

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Chapter 5

I walk down another street.

“I will put no worthless thing before my eyes.”

-Psalm 101:3

“For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen!”
