The Ten Commandments

Conclusion


“God is Faithful”


“If we are faithless, He remains faithful, [Absolute dependability] for he cannot disown himself.” [He can’t be anything else than what he is.]

-2 Timothy 2:13


Context Given

Right after being freed from Egypt.

Given to Moses on Mount Sinai.

They are “Law” given in a “Gospel” Context.


2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. [So you don’t have to look to any other gods in my place] 3 “You shall have no other gods before me. [Hebrew = Before, beside, or in opposition to me] 4 “You shall not make for yourself an image [an idol or substitute for God] in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”

-Exodus 20:1-5 


God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

-Philippians 4:19


Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are coveredwhose sin the Lord does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.” 

-Psalm 32:1,2


“It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

-Ephesians 2:8-10


The First Commandment


2 “I am the Lord Your God… 3 “You shall have no other gods before me. [beside me, or in opposition to me]


Your” (Hebrew) = Singular/Personal


God is YOUR God.

He loves YOU.

He promises to be with YOU.

He will never leave YOU.

He forgives YOU of every one of YOUR sins. 


God Provides all of Our Needs

“The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land…” 

-Isaiah 58:11


Second Commandment

 

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless [It is a sin] who misuses his name.”

-Exodus 20:7 (NIV)


Ways of Breaking the 2nd Commandment

1. Misrepresenting God’s will.

2. Watering His name down.

3. In the process of trying to get others to believe a lie.


Say to those who prophesy out of their own imagination … Woe to the foolish/wicked prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing! … 6 Their visions are false and their divinations a lie.”

-Ezekiel 13:2-6


“A prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”

-Deuteronomy 18:20


Jesus said; “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. ”

-Matthew 7:15


“‘Do not swear falsely by my NAME and so profane the NAME of your GodI am the Lord.” 

 -Leviticus 19:12

Third Commandment


“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holySix days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day [Sat.] is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work… 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested [rested in so far as he was satisfied] on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” 

-Exodus 20:8-11


Time is Valuable.


God says that YOUR time is valuable, use it wisely… Rest!


And he also gave some to his companions.” 27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

 –Mark 2:23-28

Commandments 1-3 are about our relationship with God.

Commandments 4-10 are about our relationship with others.


“An expert in the law, [Pharisee] tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

-Matthew 22:35-40 [From Dt 6:3-6]


Fourth Commandment


Honor [Heb. = To give High Weight/Value to] your father and your mother, so that [Only command with a promise.] you may live long [Prosperous] in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

-Exodus 20:12


In my experience, this 4th Commandment is the most controversial and difficult of

the Ten Commandments.

Not many people argue about the others.

How do I honor?


Whatever the combination above reflects your upbringing, “Life and Relationships” are complicated and will include hurts of many different kinds.



If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”

-Romans 12:18


2 “Let the afflicted [Hurt, damaged, injured] hear and rejoice. 3 Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

-Psalm 34:1-18


Fifth Commandment


“You shall not murder”

Honoring Human Life


Murder vs. Killing

All murder is killing, but not all killing is murder.


“Murder in the 1st degree”

(pre-planned)

“Murder in the second degree”

(not pre-planned, but none-the-less a murder)

“Man-slaughter”

(cause of death – accident)


Murder typically begins with Hate/Anger

That’s why Solomon wrote,

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

-Proverbs 4:23

That’s why Jesus said in Mt. 5


“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry [without cause] with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.”

-Matthew 5:21,22


“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold.”

-Ephesians 4:26


[Make sure that you are in the “Process” of dealing with the anger]


Sixth Commandment


[Honoring Marriage]

“You shall not commit adultery.”

-Exodus 20:14


“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure…”

-Hebrews 13:4


Don’t act like you are married to someone else when you are not.


Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.”

-1 Timothy 5:1-2

And visa versa


Seventh Commandment


[Respecting Personal Property]

“You shall not steal.”

-Exodus 20:15


"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

-Psalm 23:1


I may “WANT,” but I am not “IN WANT” 


Steal” (Hebrew) = To take for nothing.

Same Hebrew word also for “Deceit”


Satan is the Original Thief

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; [Things that do NOT belong to him] I have come [Jesus] that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

-John 10:10


“Be alert and of sober mind. [not intoxicated by emotions] Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” [Steal, Destroy]

-1 Peter 5:8


Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”

-2 Corinthians 11:14


There are only 3 ways to Get Wealth

1. Have it given to us.

[Good]

2. Work for it.

[Good]

3. Steal.

[Not good]


“Be content with what you have.” 

- Hebrews 13:5


Be carful not to Rationalize or Justify stealing.

"He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us ALL things?“

Eighth Commandment


Speaking the Truth

“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”

-Exodus 20:16

[Damaging] Lying is damaging.


“‘Do not go about spreading slander among your people. ‘Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor’s life.”

-Leviticus 19:16


“… if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against a fellow Israelite, 19 then do to the false witness as that witness intended to do to the other party.”

[Deterrent]

-Deuteronomy 19:18-19


Satan Lies

“… the devil… as a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth …When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

–John 8:44 

 

“Now the serpent [Satan] …said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” … “You will not surely die.”

-Genesis 3:1+


Resist Lying & Giving False Witness

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil…”

-James 4:7 


“Do not spread false reports. [Gossip] Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.” [Blaming others]

-Exodus 23:1


“A false witness will not go unpunished, and whoever pours out lies will perish.”

-Proverbs 19:9


“Do not testify against your neighbor without cause—would you use your lips to mislead? 29 Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me; I’ll pay them back for what they did.”

Controlling Desires


“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Exodus 20:17


“What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You COVET but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”

-James 4:1-3


Coveting is a matter of the HEART.


We should aways Pray to God:

To Change our heart from coveting.

For the things that He wants us to have.

Contentment.


Coveting Can Lead to Physical and/or Spiritual Death

•King Ahab’s wife Jezebel had Naboth falsely accused and killed. (1 Kings 21)

•Rich Young Ruler. (Mark 10:17-22)

 

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

-Mark 10:17-25 


Be Content 

“I have learned [and still are learning] to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this [things] through him who gives me strength.
