THE FALL

Genesis 2

5 God had not sent rain … but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground… Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden…   … In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.... 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” [Relational death] 18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”…19 Now the Lord God… brought them [All the animals] to the man to see what he would name them …But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep…he took one of the man’s ribs … 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; [Heb = “This is it”. “She is it.”]  she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become ONE flesh. 25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.”

[This describes innocence, not just lack of clothing]

Gen. 3 “… serpent [Heb. = “Shining One”] … said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said… “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but … must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, [Eve added] or you will die.’”

Note:

Satan doesn’t present himself as he really is.

He always presents himself as something else.

“… Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”

-2 Corinthians 11:14

“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” [In other words, God is holding back from you something that is good.]

Satan

“… a liar and the father of lies.”

-John 8:44

Jesus

“I am the truth

-John 14:6

… the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”

[Adam was there listening to the whole thing, yet did not say or do anything]

1 Timothy 2:14

“Adam was not the one deceived; [Adam knowingly disobeyed.] it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.” [Eve unknowingly sinned. But she did sin. Ignorance may be a reason but is never an excuse for sinning]

Romans 5:12

“Therefore, just as sin entered the world [“Original Sin”] through one man, [Adam] and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people...”

Forgiveness through Jesus

“For as in Adam all die, [“Original Sin” that we are now all born with] so in Christ [The Messiah, Jesus] all will be made alive.” [Forgiven]

-1 Corinthians 15:22

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked

[They felt …]

Guilt – awareness of sin.

Shame – desire to hide.

Fear – especially before God (3:10).

Separation – from God and each other.

Vulnerable and without protection.

so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings [Clothes] for [to benefit] themselves.

[Their effort to get rid of their]

Guilt – awareness of sin.

Shame – desire to hide.

Fear – especially before God (3:10).

Separation – from God and each other.

Vulnerable and without protection.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, [Our Fig Leaf Clothing will not work] it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

- Ephesians 2:8-10

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. [We can NEVER hide our sin from God] But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 Adam answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” 11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? … 12 The man said, “The woman [Blames Eve] you put here with me [Blames God] …” [No personal blame] 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this [Sin] you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” [Eve blames the Devil. She should have answered God’s question as to what she had done with; “I didn’t listen to you”. “I disobeyed you.”] 14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity [Hostility & Conflict] between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he [Jesus] will crush your head, [On cross] and you [Satan] will strike his heel.” 16 To the woman [Eve] he said, “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children.

“Your desire will be for your husband,

[Can mean relational tension or a desire to control a husband if married]

and he will rule over you.”

[It Describes but not Prescribes distorted authority which can be seen to a large degree in every society. It predicts male domination and power struggles b/c of sin.

17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife [Rather than God] and ate fruit… “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil [“Work” which is good will now also be exhausting and painful.] you will eat food from it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you… [We will have to fight creation to stay alive] 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” [Death] 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. [The first bloodshed] 22 And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” [Live forever in a sinful state] 23 So the Lord God banished [An act of mercy and protection.] him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”

Conclusion

Where did the Helicopter touch down the heaviest for you today?

•The Creation/Evolution issue.

•Being Silent like Adam when you should speak up.

•The Adam’s Blaming issue when you should take personal responsibility.

•The Lying issue like Satan not fully representing the truth.

•The Hiding from God issue. (Adam/Eve)

Power struggles in marriage.

Not receiving the Grace of God’s full forgiveness, but rather making fig leaves trying to cover up your sin your self.

The GREAT NEWS is that God will help you in every area above.

God will forgive you in every area as well.

“… he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

-1 John 1:9
