Exodus 7

(The purpose of the 10 Plagues)

To tear down the gods of Egypt

My Goal = That your faith grows more than your knowledge.

They will “know” that I am the Lord

1. Judgmentally (-Exodus 12:12)

  “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. [Not the people] I am the Lord.”

The most loving thing that God can do is to smash your idols.

“Gardeners are never closest to their plants than when they are pruning them.”

Note: Anything can become an idol, even good things.

Q: What are the things, that if God took them away, you would feel like you could not do without?

They will “know” that I am the Lord

2. Evangelically (Exodus 12:38)

“A mixed multitude also went up with them.” [Out of Egypt in the Exodus] 

The people were not happy with Moses. 

Moses complains to God

“Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”

(Ex 5:23)  

We complain to God using Moses’ words

“Why”

[What good did it do?] 

 “Ever since” … “trouble”

[It did not work] 

 Moses said to God; “you have not rescued your people at all.”

[It didn’t work]  

How to respond when doing the Christian things seems to be failing.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean NOT on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will [in time] make your paths straight.“

-Proverbs 3:5,6

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

–Galatians 6:9

EXODUS 7

Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. [Spokesperson] 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country.

Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord…

God wants everyone to go to heaven.

"This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

-1 Timothy 2:3,4

"The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance." [To turn]

-2 Peter 3:9

"As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn [Repent] from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways!"

-Ezekiel 33:11

"For God so loved the world [All people] that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever [Anyone] believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, [we were already condemned] but to save the world through him."

BACK TO EXODUS 7

5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it. 6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them. 7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Satan wants to deceive people by lies and false signs and wonders

Aaron’s Staff Becomes a Snake

9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.”… 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

Q:  Where might we not be listening to God?

"I will GIVE you a new heart and PUT a new spirit in you; I will REMOVE from you your heart of stone [Hard and resistant] and GIVE you a heart of flesh." [Soft and responsive]
