EXODUS 20
4th Commandment
“Honor your father and your mother, so that [The only commandment with a promise attached to it] you may live long [Prosperous] in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”
-Exodus 20:12
“Honor” (Hebrew)
- To make heavy.
- To put High Weight/Value upon.
- Give your parents weighty value.
Ie. when a mom on a playground says that she wants to leave now, that carries more weight (as Mother) than the child who is not ready to go.
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, [“in connection with” the Lord] for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” 4 Fathers, [Greek word can mean also “Parents”] do not exasperate [Don’t provoke] your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” [In BOTH words and actions]

“You shall not murder”
Honoring Human Life
Murder vs. Killing
All murder is killing,
but not all killing is murder.
Immoral Killing vs Moral Killing
(Murder) vs (Killing)
(Illegal taking of a life) vs (Legal taking of a life)
(Unjustified) vs (Justified)
Examples of legal, moral, justified killing:
Hunting to eat
Self-defense
“Just War”
Jews were allowed to defend themselves

“Cities of Refuge” [for accidental deaths]
But murder was a Capital Offense/Death.
Murder typically begins with Hate/Anger.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry [without cause] with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment.”

6th Commandment
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
Our Social Issues of the Day Statement
“We believe that sexual activity apart from the monogamous, heterosexual relationship after marriage is sin.”
[Temptation is not sin.]
13 “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”

15 “You shall not steal.

8th Commandment
16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.”
[DO] “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. [DON’T] Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. [DO] Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.” [Don’t get distracted]

Covet = to strongly and enviously desire something that belongs to someone else.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
