I will dwell among them. 9 Make this tabernacle and all its furnishings exactly like the pattern I will show you.”

-Exodus 25:8,9

Terminology

“Tabernacle” = Portable structure

“Temple” = Permanent structure

The Tabernacle/Temple Represented:

•God's presence

•Sacrifices

•Priestly worship

•Atonement/forgiveness of sins

Terminology

“The Church” = God’s people

"Now you are the body of Christ, and individually members of it."

-1 Corinthians 12:27

“You [Christians] are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

-1 Peter 2:9

“He [Jesus] himself is our peace, who has made the two groups [Jews & Gentiles] one [Christians] and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility… [No anti Semitism] 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility…” 18 …you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”

-Ephesians 2:14–22

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”

 -1 Corinthians 3:16

In the New Testament, Jesus is described as the new and ultimate Temple

After Jesus Clears the Temple…

18 The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, [His body] and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 They replied, “It has taken 46 years to build this temple, [Physical] and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body.”

-John 2:18-20

Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice on the cross replaces the Temple's sacrificial system

Heb 9 “Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2 A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3 Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4 which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.

The Book of Hebrews sums it up.

5 Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover… the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. 7 But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people… 11 But when Christ came as high priest … 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption… without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness… 27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” [Second Coming. End of the World]

(Hebrews 9)

“When Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. [Died] 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”

-Matthew 27:50,51

God's presence now dwells inside Believers

“Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit”.

(1 Corinthians 6:19)

Christians can approach God through Jesus, rather than needing to go to a particular building in Jerusalem.

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

-Hebrews 4:16

The presence of God now dwells Inside of Christians.

Q: Where is the Ark of the Covenant today?

A: We don’t know!

[one of the great unresolved mysteries of biblical history.]

It was carried around for about 400 years before Solomon built the first Temple around 960 BC.

Some Theories as to where the Ark of the Covenant is today:

1. Jerusalem: Hidden somewhere before the Babylonian destruction of the First Temple in 586 BC.

[beneath the Temple Mount?]

2. Ethiopia: Ethiopian Ortho Church claims it is in Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion guarded by watchers.

3. Babylon: Destroyed when the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem. Interestingly, the biblical account of the

4. Hidden before the destruction: Jewish tradition holds that King Josiah had the Ark hidden before being conquered.

(2 Maccabees 2:4–8)

The Temple used to be God's dwelling place, but Jesus presented himself as the new and ultimate meeting place between God and people.“Destroy this temple, [His body, the place where God’s glory dwells] and in three days I will raise it up.”

-John 2:19

“The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”

(Matthew 27:51)

Gives us direct access to God's presence through Jesus.
