GENESIS 21
8 The child [Isaac] grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,
Galatians 4:29
“At that time the son [Ishmael] born according to the flesh persecuted the son [Isaac] born by the power of the Spirit.”
[Back to GENESIS 21]
10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman’s son will never share in the inheritance [b/c Isaac was the son of the promise of Chosen People] with my son Isaac.” 11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman… because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned. 13 I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring.” 14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off [Abe was not mean, he was obedient] with the boy.
GENESIS 22
“Some time [Long time] later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”… “Take your son, your only son, [“Unique” son] whom you love … [First time “Love” appears in the bible. God is magnifying the cost of the sacrifice God asked of Abe] to the region of Moriah. [Current Temple Mount] Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering [Total sacrifice] on a mountain I will show you.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. 5 He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” [Abraham believed that God would resurrect him] 6 Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, 7 Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb …?” 8 Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb [Hebrew literal translation = ‘God will provide Himself the lamb for the burnt offering’ pointing forward to Jesus] for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he… took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, [Respect enough to trust] because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Jehovah Jireh

Romans 8:32
“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” [Provide]
[Back to GENESIS 22]
15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “…because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations [For God so loved the WORLD that he gave his one and only Son… John 3:16] on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
John 8:49+
“I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me... 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” 52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” 54 Jesus replied… 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it [In God providing a Lamb for sacrifice] and was glad.”
-John 8:49-56
Hebrews 11:17-19
“By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.”
Lessons from Abraham offering Isaac
1.Faith is trusting God even when something doesn’t make sense.
2. God often comes through at the last minute.
3. Obedience is an Act of Love.
4. God’s tests will strengthen us as well as reveal the strength that we already have.
5. God Keeps His Promises.
Romans 8:32
“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” [Provide]
