Miracles of Jesus - Part 1
Lent 5 - 2026
The Purpose of Jesus’ Miracles
1. Nothing is Out of Jesus’ Control.
2. He is the Messiah/Son of God.
John 20:30,31
“Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
John 21:25
“Jesus did many other things as well. [Both Miracles and non-Miracles] If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.”
Miracles of Nature
Miracles of Healing
Miracles of Deliverance
Miracles of Resurrection
Each miracle reveals something about Jesus’ identity.
1. Miracles of Nature
[Water turned into wine]
“On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” 4 “Woman, [Term of endearment] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.”
– John 2:1–11
Jesus brings new life, new joy, and the new covenant.
(“Grace”, not just “Ritual”)
He cares about everyday/ordinary life stuff (This wasn’t a crisis)
[Calming the storm]
“That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
-Mark 4:35-41
This miracle was not just about weather,
it was about who He is and how we either trust or do not trust Him.
The storm stopped instantly.
Jesus was in the boat the whole time, even though He seemed asleep.
God’s presence doesn’t mean absence of storms, but it does mean that we’re not alone in them.
2. Miracles of Healing
[Healing Peter’s mother-in-law]
“When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.”
- Matthew 8:14–15
Luke 4:39 says; “He bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.

He cares about ordinary people
[At home, not in a public setting.]
