What the Centurion would have observed
1. A guy that probably should NOT have been Crucified.
(slaves, foreigners, zealots, vilest crimes.)
2. A circus of a trial.
3. His boss (Pontius Pilate) scared.
4. A confident man in Jesus
Hebrews 12:12+
“Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”
5. A pretty tough man in Jesus.
(Mocked, Called names, Crowned, Robe, Scepter, Beaten, Whipped, Crucified, etc.)
6. Being confused as to why a man being crucified would want to have the people who played a part in it given forgiveness.
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”
- Lk 23:34
7. Impressed that Jesus changed the attitude of one of the two criminals also crucified that day.
“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”…“I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”
- Luke 23:42,44
8. A Man who appeared to actually WANT to die.
9. A Man who calmly, and under control, put His whole being into the hands of His Heavenly Father.
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”
- Luke 23:46
“From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
- Matthew 27:45-54
