A Helicopter Trip Over the Old Testament

Part 2

The Flood

My Goal = That your faith grows more than your knowledge.

The Breakdown of the Book of Genesis

Genesis 1-11 Highlights Events

Genesis 12-50 Highlights People

The Breakdown of the Events

Genesis 1 & 2

FORMATION (Creation)

Genesis 3-5

FALL (Forbidden fruit)

Genesis 6-9

FLOOD (Noah’s Ark)

Genesis 10 & 11

FALLOUT (Tower of Babel)

GENESIS 4

Eve, became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” [Hebrew = “I have gotten a man the Lord.”] Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

There are a lot of “Firsts” in chapter 4

Pregnancy, Birth, Family, Dysfunctional Family, Death of a human, Crime, Murder…

Now Abel kept flocks [Shepherd], and Cain worked the soil. [Farmer] In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering—fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. [Biggest and Best] The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, BUT on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, [We can make an educated guest that God told Adam & Eve about offering sacrifices to him long before it was officially written down years later by Moses in Leviticus.] sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you,

but you must rule over it.” Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” [Sounds like his father doesn’t it? No personal responsibility] 10 The Lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer…Cain said … “My punishment is more than I can bear… whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain… so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden. 17 Cain’s wife… became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch…25 Eve gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, “God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.” 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time people began to call on the name of the Lord.”

GENESIS 5

This is the written account of Adam’s family line… When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him SethAfter Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh… he became the father of Kenan… became the father of Mahalalel…he became the father of Jared18 … became the father of Enoch21  … became the father of Methuselah25  … became the father of Lamech28 … had a son. 29 He named him Noah … 32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of ShemHam and Japheth.

THE FLOOD

(NOAH’S ARK)

GENESIS 6

Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.” [120 years until the Flood]

The Old Testament Angry God?

Mini-judgments

(forecasting the Ultimate Judgment Day)

when Jesus returns

2 Peter 2:1-9

[50-75 yrs to build ARK]

“If God did not spare… the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness… 9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment.”

GENESIS 6

5 “The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time

Q: What is this “Great Wickedness”

and

Every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only Evil all the time”?

Q: Were things more wicked then or now?

The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.” [Pained]

*“Regretted” = Hebrew word shares the same root as the word “Noah”

*Regret does not mean God made a mistake.

*Not regret as in, “Oh man, I made a mistake. I wish I hadn’t have done that.

*He has something that he genuinely loves that is of a great delight to him that has now been stripped away.

Q: What things do you regret?

Q: What things did you once feel comfort from, that because of sin, you may now regret having ever been a part of?

Ie. Divorce

(You once felt comfort and joy until sin stripped away that comfort and joy.)

*God is now feeling “Unrest” about the people he created.

*God has been stripped of the “Comfort” of his creation.

*Where he was once excited about his creation that excitement and joy has now been stripped away.

Jesus comes into the world to save it with this same “grief”

“He [Jesus] was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, [Sorrows] and familiar with pain.” [Grief]

-Isaiah 53:3

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, BUT you were not willing.”

-Matthew 23:37

[Jesus is grieved]

GENESIS 6

7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals… 8 BUT Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord… 9 Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God

It seems like God had only 3 options

1.Destroy ALL of creation.

2.Just let it all go on unchecked.

3.Redeem it all.

[Buy it back with the payment of Jesus on the cross]

10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth. 11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence… 13 So God said to Noah, I am going to put an end to all people… 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it … 15 This is how you are to build it:

[See video: Ark Experience]

15 The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.

[450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high]

150 yards long, 25 yards wide, 15 yards high

July 2016 Noah’s Ark Theme Park, Williamstown, KY

16 Make a roof … Put a door …make lower, middle and upper decks… “Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. [8 total] 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. 20 Two of every kind [not species] of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you [Animals came to Noah] to be kept alive. 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.” 22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.”

GENESIS 7

2 Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, [Used for sacrifice] … and one pair of every kind of unclean [Not for sacrifice] animal… Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.” And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him. Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth. And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood… 10 And after the seven days the floodwaters came on the earth… on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 15 Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah [God did the hard work] and entered the ark… 17 … as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth… 19 They rose greatly on the earth…and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits. [23 feet] 24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.”…

GENESIS 8

Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. … And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind. Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants… Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind…”

Summary of God’s Grace

*God saved Noah and 7 others.

*God provided for about 370 days on the Ark.

*Rainbow Promise.

*Jesus is our Ark.

A Cute Children’s Story

And

A Sobering Story for Adults

God’s judgment fell on Jesus

“He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

 -Isaiah 53:5

“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…”

-Romans 8:1
